Day 11, September 16, 2017 - Below Goddard Canyon to Evolution Lake outlet

Day 11th.  We had egg burritos for breakfast for our breakfast after resupply.  Last night we both slept cowboy and were dry in the morning, no condensation. This makes packing up and getting out in the morning much nicer.  I noticed that the trees I had slept next to had picked up two rocks over the years.  You see some really cool stuff out here when you take the time to notice.

Got out of camp by 8:35.  The morning low temperature was 39, felt surprisingly warm. Our morning goal was to get up into Evolution Valley, across Evolution Creek and to a nice lunch spot. Some of you might wonder if we still do pushups on bridges  Well yes, but I have not been including those pictures, as well, not to exciting.  But here is one on the last bridge we would cross for a very long time (with the requisite morning frost).

The climb up the switchbacks to Evolution Valley provided lots of great views.

Especially at the top

We got to the top of the evolution valley switchbacks around 10 am. Shortly after was the creek crossing.

Mark needed to tend to his feet after that.  He had been doctoring blisters on both feet daily since very early in the trip.  Poor guy, not sure how he was able to keep up the pace with so many blisters.  The nice thing about the stop was eating the previous night’s dessert of Swiss milk chocolate bars and macadamia nuts.   I think we got going again around 11.

First we got to hike along Evolution Meadow,

And then we reached McClure meadow

at our camp spot from 4 years ago. Stunning, looked just like it did then except no scouts around.  We relaxed here for awhile and ate lunch.

Sometime this day we saw the person who was trying to break the JMT speed record mentioned on day 3.  He definitely looked the part, and he walked by so quickly neither of us managed to get a picture of possibly the new speed record holder.  See Day 18 for the result of his quest.

We completed the climb up to Evolution Lake around 3:30.  Clouds and wind were building through the afternoon, a common theme for the first half of our trip.

Crossing the outlet was a bit of an adventure in rock hopping, probably 25 different rocks to step on to complete the crossing.  Note to the observant, yes this is me leaving our camp spot the next morning, not arriving.

I arrived at Evolution Lake first, crossed the outlet, and immediately set up to go fishing.  I thought I would have time to catch a few before Mark arrived, but he was there only 10 minutes later.  We both scouted for a camping spot, one sheltered from the wind and potential rain, so we were not able to camp on the balcony overlooking Evolution Valley.

Due to the very angry looking clouds, we both set up our tents. By the time this was all completed, it was cold and breezy out, and I was not super motivated to fish. Maybe in the morning.  Made dinner with temps in the mid 40s.  Pretty sunset, sky stayed red for a long time.

In bed at 8 to get out of the cold and wind.
